CODES OF CONDUCT

Vancouver FC (VAN FC) Parent Code of Conduct

Vancouver FC has implemented the following Parent Code of Conduct for the important message that it holds about the proper role of parents in supporting their child in sports. Parents should read, understand and sign this form prior to their children participating in any VAN FC events. Any parent guilty of improper conduct at any game or practice will be asked to leave the sports facility and be suspended from the following game. Repeat violations may cause a multiple game suspension, or the season forfeiture of the privilege of attending all games, practices or other events sanctioned by VAN FC.

Preamble:

The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and six core principals:

  • Trustworthiness,
  • Respect,
  • Responsibility,
  • Fairness,
  • Caring,
  • Good Citizenship.

The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “six pillars of character.”

I therefore agree:

  1. I will not force my child to participate in sports that they do not wish to participate in. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the game is for youth, not adults.
  2. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
  3. I will learn the rules of the game and the policies of the Club, League and District.
  4. I (and my guests), will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, officials and spectators at every game, practice or other sporting event.
  5. I (and my guests), will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such as booing and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language of gestures.
  6. I will not encourage any behaviours or practices that would endanger the health and well-being of the athletes.
  7. I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
  8. I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, colour, sex or ability.
  9. I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a game or their performance.
  10. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
  11. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  12. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning.
  13. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
  14. I will respect the officials and their authority during games and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches at the game field, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed upon time and place. I will not discuss issues with coaches on game days or during practices.
  15. The field area and coaches sidelines are for teams and officials only. When possible I will remain on the opposite side of the field to the players and coaches sidelines.
  16. I will refrain from criticism of coaches, referees, or opponents during games and in the presence of my child or other children. Constructive criticism, when you feel necessary, should be directed towards your team’s coaches in private.
  17. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all sports events.
  18. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during games and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.
  19. I will, when able, assist with tasks as requested by coaches or managers (i.e. putting nets up, taking nets down after games, lining fields, etc.).
  20. I will ensure that if my child is absent from a game or practice that adequate notice will be given to the coaches or manager.
  21. I will do my very best to ensure that my child is prepared for every game and practice.
  22. I understand that improper behavior at a game may result in a parent being asked to leave the field by the referee, team or club official so the coach does not receive a yellow card caution or red card ejection due to the actions of the parent spectators.
  23. I understand that VAN FC can, and will if necessary, suspend my individual privilege to watch my child play, practice or attend VAN FC sanctioned events should I behave in a manner that is rude or otherwise offensive.
  24. I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action that could include, but is not limited to the following:
  • Verbal warning by official, head coach, and/or head of Club, League or District.
  • Written warning.
  • Parental game suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by organizations involved.
  • Game forfeit through the official or coach.
  • Parental season suspension.

Vancouver FC (VAN FC ) Player Code of Conduct

This document has been developed to distinguish approved and accepted professional, ethical, and moral behaviour for VAN FC team members. If you do not understand any element of this code please speak with your coach and ask for clarification. It is expected that players in agreeing to be part of a VAN FC team will respect this Code of Conduct and the Club philosophy. You will be asked to sign this Code of Conduct and return it to your Team Manager. Please ensure that you keep a copy of this Code of Conduct for your reference.

Code of Conduct

o   It is a privilege to play for a VAN FC team. Players are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner which is in keeping with representing their Team, Club, District and League in a professional manner.

o   Players are expected to know and respect the rules of soccer, their Club, District and League and abide by them at all times.

o   Players are expected to show good sportsmanship at all times and conduct themselves with honor and dignity while working for the good of their team and giving their best effort at all times.

o   Coaches are appointed by the VAN FC Board and are under the direction of the Club Technical Director who ensures that a monitoring system is in place throughout the evaluation, selection process, and regular season and Cup play.

Demonstrate Commitment and Performance

o   Commitment is to your VAN FC Team. This takes priority over other sports and activities for the duration of the soccer season and related Cup play. The only exceptions are important soccer related activities as approved by your Team Coach and the VAN FC Technical Director.

o   Players are expected to be on time for all training sessions, games and events. Lateness WILL NOT be tolerated.

o   Report to your Team Coach all injuries, special medical conditions (such as asthma), or extenuating circumstances (such as lack of sleep or family crisis), that may affect the player. Injured players still need to report to training unless excused by your Team Coach.

o   If you cannot attend a session, game or event you must email your Team Manager or Coach at least one day prior with the reason for your absence before receiving approval. Players that miss sessions without notification will have a review of their participation based on the circumstances and communication.

Communication

VAN FC will strive to communicate professionally and openly with players and parents. The Club will mainly communicate via the club website (www.vancouverfc.ca) and email.

o   It is the responsibility of the player and parents to have a proper email address that is checked regularly.

o   It is the responsibility of the player and parents to check and review the website to understand the Club, its programs and policies.

o   It is the responsibility of the player and parents to know all team staff and club contacts.

o   It is the responsibility of the player and parents to regularly check the website for updates.

Dress Code

Players are required to wear assigned VAN FC equipment for all official events.

o   If issued, VAN FC training gear must be worn to all training sessions.

o   VAN FC gear must be worn to all games and if required by the Team Coach while traveling to and from games and at all official meetings.

Playing Time and Selection

o   Playing time and selection will be based on performance and attitude. At instructed by VAN FC  playing time policy, players can expect to play a minimum of 30% available playing time for league games - assuming they are at full fitness, participate in training sessions and have demonstrated a positive attitude towards the team and other players. There is no minimum playing time in Cup play. Player selection is at the discretion and final decision of the Team Coach.

o   Any discussion of playing time outside of player performance should not be discussed with the Team Coaches. Any concerns in this area can be addressed to the Technical Director.

o   Lack of respect for this guideline, or discussions with Team Head Coaches on the topic may affect participation.

Follow the Lines of Communication

o   The main contact for information is your Team Manager who will be in place within the first few weeks of training. Your Team Manager may direct queries to the Team Head Coach, Technical Director, or VAN FC Board of Directors as appropriate.

o   Speak to your Team Coach at the proper time. Do not discuss issues with coaches on game days or during a practice. If you have concerns you can ask for the best time to talk, or use the telephone or email. If it is about a game it is best to wait 24 hours before discussing with your coach.

Sportsmanship and Respect for the Opposition and Officials

o   Realize that a team’s reputation is built not only on its playing ability, but also on sportsmanship.

o   Be gracious in victory, and turn defeat into victory by working toward improvement.

o   Refrain from commenting on the decisions of officials during the game. The team captain may address the officials during the game, but only within the provisions of the rules, and in a courteous, respectful manner. DO NOT openly question the judgment or honesty of any game officials.

o   Any negative comments by a player, parent or team official regarding officiating will be taken seriously and may result in disciplinary action.

o   The use of abusive language, profanity, humiliating remarks, and/or gestures of ill temper, will not be tolerated.

Respect for Opposition and Facilities

o   In representing VAN FC you are expected to respect not only opposition players, but also all opposition facilities. This includes cleaning up after yourself at the end of all games and keeping any guest opposition facilities in the state they were found. Any violation of this will not be tolerated.

Player Discipline

1.      The use of a substance (drugs, alcohol or tobacco), or possession of a substance, or both use and possession, is cause for immediate dismissal.

2.      Persistent irresponsible and disrespectful behavior is cause for dismissal.

3.      Destruction of property or violation of provincial, state or other law is cause for dismissal.

4.      Failure to comply with any and all team rules (attendance, dress code, schedules, etc.), may be cause for disciplinary action. At the discretion of the VAN FC Board persistent failure will be cause for suspension or dismissal from the Club for the remainder of the current season, and could affect a player’s further participation.

5.      The VAN FC Board retains its rights to impose additional penalties for any violation of 1-4. Please note that if dismissal or suspension occurs while away, the player may be sent home immediately at the parent’s expense by whatever means is most convenient for the team official. No reimbursement of any fees will be made to the dismissed or suspended player or the player’s family.
